Shoura chief underlines joint GCC efforts for peace

Shoura Council Chairman Abdullah Al-Asheikh said in Jeddah on Saturday that the joint efforts of the leaders of GCC states have strengthened unity, peace and security in member countries.
Al-Asheikh was making the opening remarks at the fifth meeting of heads of legislative bodies of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries at the Conference Palace in Jeddah.
The Shoura chairman recalled that the unified endeavors of the Gulf countries were instrumental in subduing the violence in Bahrain. The Peninsula Shield force was sent to Bahrain on the principle of unity and security interdependence among GCC states, Al-Asheikh said, adding that it was the joint responsibility of the GCC to maintain peace, security and stability in the region.
The Peninsula Shield is a joint military forces that the GCC states established in 1986. Its mission was to protect the security of member states from any external aggression.
Al-Asheikh also thanked Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for the initiative taken to persuade Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to sign a landmark agreement in Riyadh for the smooth transfer of power in that country. The agreement, he said, had paved the way to restore normalcy in Yemen.
He welcomed Mohamed Al-Mur, chairman of the UAE assembly, and Sheikh Khalid Mowli, chairman of the parliament in Oman, who assumed the posts recently. He also took the opportunity to thank their respective predecessors, Abdulaziz Al-Ghureir and Ahmed Al-Essayi, for their service.
Al-Mur, who chaired the fourth meeting of heads of GCC legislatures in Abu Dhabi last year, thanked the Kingdom for hosting the conference and also appreciated King Abdullah's efforts to maintain security and stability in the region. He stressed that future challenges could be met successfully with the united action.
In a message to the meeting, GCC Secretary-General Abdullatif Al-Zayyani, outlined the progressive efforts of the GCC countries. Al-Zayyani thanked King Abdullah for his constructive efforts that have contributed to maintaining peace in the region.
