Schools assigning cleaning work to children warned

Schools assigning cleaning work to children warned
The department of education in Riyadh has sent urgent circulars to all schools in the region warning against exploiting students in cleaning work or asking them to donate money, local Arabic daily Al-Eqtisadiah reported quoting official sources at the department.

The sources said the decision was taken after a number of parents had complained that some schools were forcing the students to clean the toilets or the courtyard as a punishment for misdemeanor.

"Punishing students by asking them to clean the school is an improper educational step," said an educationalist who did not want his name published.

The sources, however, approved the cleaning weeks being organized by the schools and said this was an educational method teaching students the importance of living in a clean environment. They said the cleaning weeks, organized at fixed times of the year under certain conditions, were approved by the ministry so as to inculcate in the students the values of cleanliness and the principles of working together for a good cause.

The sources said the cleaning weeks were being held without humiliating or hurting any of the students.

They recalled that the Ministry of Education was spending large sums of money on private companies to clean schools and other educational facilities.
