Rose-pruning season begins in Taif
In January farmers in Taif start pruning and trimming rose bushes. Trimming is necessary to make them strong and more productive.
Taif roses are in high demand in the Kingdom and other Arab countries. Its fragrance is distinctive.
Large-scale rose plantations are found in Al-Hada, Al-Shifa and other suitable locations in Taif.
“The rose trimming season has been called Al-Taraf for centuries. January is the ideal time for that,” Fahd bin Hilal, a farmer in Al-Hada, told Arab News.
Trimming is an ancient practice. Besides increasing the number of flower buds, the practice makes harvesting easier for farmers because a number of unwanted thorny branches are removed.
The flowers are ready for harvest after two or three months with the onset of the spring season. The cut branches are used to grow new plants.
After the removal of unnecessary branches, the plant will have an average height of between 80 centimeters and one meter. Farmers do not like the plant to be taller than that especially when it has a tendency to grow fast in the cold climate.
The plant starts to sprout leaves 10 or 14 days after planting and light irrigation is required until more leaves grow. Suitable fertilizers are also necessary for healthy growth.
The plants grow at high altitudes in abundance while the plains are not suitable.
More than 2,000 rose farms are found in the mountainous regions of Taif. A number of factories process fragrance into rose essence and water. Marketing and export also create a number of job opportunities for the local people.
