Mathai to hold talks with US officials on key issues
Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai arrives in Washington on Monday for talks with top American officials on a host of bilateral and regional issues and begin preparations for the third US-India Strategic Dialogue, expected to be held here in summer.
In what will be his first visit to Washington since taking over as the Foreign Secretary last August, Mathai will have meetings at the State Department, the White House and Capitol Hill.
Implementation of the civil nuclear deal, implications of the Iran sanctions on oil trade and Afghan reconciliation talks are expected to be among the subjects to be deliberated upon.
Long after the sealing of the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, the liability issue still remains a stumbling block with Washington expecting New Delhi to make further moves to enable American companies to participate in India’s plans to expand nuclear power generation.
Besides holding regular Foreign Office Consultations with his US counterpart, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman, Mathai is also slated to meet Deputy Secretary of State William Burns and Deputy National Security Advisor Michael Froman.
“They’re, of course, going to discuss all of the issues that fall under our strong bilateral relationship as well as many global issues,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters.
Without going into specifics, Toner told a questioner, “As you know, we’ve repeatedly from this podium talked about the indispensable partnership with India, and President Obama noted this in his trip in 2010.”
Asked about talks over the tightening of sanctions on Iran and their impact on oil trade, Toner said the US was talking to all its allies and partners on this matter. “We are trying to do it in a fashion that doesn’t put undue pressure on our partners,” he said.
Mathai will also be addressing the Centre for Strategic and International Studies here on the subject of deepening strategic partnership between the two countries.
