Server consolidation, efficient and fast disaster recovery, cost savings, high availability and fast virtual server
deployments are just some of the things you can accomplish with VMware vSphere 4. ESX 4 is the most powerful
virtualization software on the market today and in this training course, Elias Khnaser will guide you through the
planning, deployment and administration of your virtual infrastructure. VMware is one of the fastest growing companies
today and its virtualization software is the hottest technology in the computer world today, so if you are trying to
advance your career and need the next hot thing, ESX Server is that technology that will give you the edge you need to
get ahead.
For those of you that are seeking certification, you are still required to attend the VMware class as that is a
mandatory step in achieving your certification. You can use our CBT to reinforce what you learned. If you are trying to
learn VMware vSphere 4 because of a job requirement, this training course gives you practical, hands on training from
someone who does it on a day to day basis and has implemented some large ESX deployments.
The CBT contains 13 videos as follows:
* Module 1: Introduction to Virtualization
* Module 2: Installing and Configuring ESX/ESXi 4
* Module 3: vCenter Operations
* Module 4: Networking Operations
* Module 5: Storage Operations
* Module 6: Virtual Machine Operations
* Module 7: vSphere Security & vShield Zones
* Module 8: Monitoring & Troubleshooting
* Module 9: Resource Management
* Module 10: High Availability & Data Protection
* Module 11: Planning & Implementing a vSphere Upgrade
* Module 12: vCenter Update Manager & Host Profiles
* Module 13: vNetwork Distributed Switches & Cisco Nexus 1000V
** The Site Recovery Manager videos will be made available soon
Module 1: Introducing vSphere 4
In this module we lay down a solid foundation and understanding of Virtualization, why it’s so popular and what it
offers. We go into the different terminologies and the different vendors that offer the technology. A great introductory
module. We also cover what’s new in vSpehere 4.
Module 2: Installing & Configuring ESX/ESXi 4
This module walks you through the installation of ESX/ESXi 4 using media disks such as a CD-ROM, Scripted install using
NAS and other network resources. We also talk about post installation tweaks and configurations. This module also
includes a manual upgrade from ESX 3.5 to ESX 4.
Module 3: vCenter Operations
vCenter creates the enterprise. With these words I like to summarize and stress the importance of vCenter. It is this
application in the VMware Infrastructure suite that allows enterprise features like VMotion, High Availability and
Distributed Resource Scheduler to function. It is also the applications that groups and centrally manages all ESX hosts
and Virtual Machines in the environment.
Module 4: Networking Operations
Virtual networking is one of the coolest concepts in virtualization and in this module we take a road trip and tackle
all the features and concepts that the VMware Infrastructure offers. We also take a deep technical dive into the new
Distributed Switching and the Cisco Nexus 1000V.
Module 5: Storage Operations
If you think Virtualization is on fire, take a closer look at Storage, it is double on fire. Storage in a VMware
Infrastructure is one of the most critical components. This module tackles Fibre Channel Storage, iSCSI and NAS.
Configuring each technology and leveraging it to the fullest. This module also tackles the very cool concept of Storage
VMotion, Thin Provisioning and more new features introduced with vSphere 4. Super cool technology!! It’s Magic!
Module 6: Virtual Machine Operations
This modules walks you through the creation of Virtual machines, working with Templates and Gold builds. How to quickly
provision VMs. How to configure VMs and tweak their resources for optimal performance. Brace yourself for an amazing
module filled with information.
Module 7: vSphere Security & vShield Zones
What good is an environment without proper access control measures in place? In this module we discuss role based access
to your VMware Infrastructure environment. How to delegate control and implement security.
Module 8: Monitoring & Troubleshooting
Building a great environment is not enough. Maintaining a great environment is equally challenging. In this module we
take a look at how we can monitor resources in our environment in order to be proactive and detect issues before they
occur.
Module 9: Resource Management
A virtual environment is all about Resource management. The more resources are available the better your VMs and your
hosts will perform. In this module we tackle resource pools, clusters, VMotion, Distributed Resource Clusters or DRS and
Distributed Power
Management or DPM. We will also explore Storage VMotion which allows us to migrate a VM’s files while it is powered on
and we will also dig into Thin Provisioning and see how we can leverage that to better manage storage needs.
Module 10: High Availability & Fault Tolerance
In today’s fast paced business, it is unacceptable to have systems go down. This module covers how VMware vSphere 4 can
provide High Availability to a virtual environment. This module goes one step further and shows you how you can use one
of the newest, coolest features of vSphere 4, Fault Tolerance. This module also discusses the different ways to backup
and restore your VMs and your Hosts
Module 11: Planning & Implementing a vSphere Upgrade
This module walks you through the necessary prerequisities needed to successfully plan and implement an upgrade to
vSphere.
Module 12: vCenter Update Manager & Host Profiles
Patch management is a critical task that every tech person has to address. VMware Update Manager, an add-on application
that extends vCenter’s capabilities and allows for the automated patching of ESX hosts and Virtual Machines.
Module 13: vNetwork Distributed Switches & Cisco Nexus 1000V
vDS is one of the newest features introduced with vSphere 4 that allows for centralized virtual switches that cross
multiple hosts. This module focues on how to use vDS and the Cisco Nexus 1000V, a 3rd party virtual switch that allows
network administrators a familiar Cisco IOS and extends virtual switch features and capabilities.
