    Polypill for Heart Disease

There is now ample evidence to support the use of many medicines following heart attack, to reduce the likelihood of recurrence and death. While it is now common practice to aggressively lower blood pressure, modify cholesterol and recommend an aspirin following heart attack, compliance with 3 medicines is often difficult in the real word. Today, the president of the World Heart Federation, is recommending the creation of a single pill that contains 3 ingredients to prevent recurrent heart attacks and premature death. The pill would be a combination of aspirin which reduces blood ?stickiness? and reduces the chance of dangerous clots form forming, a statin, which is a powerful medicine that lowers levels of bad cholesterol, and an ACE inhibitor, a medicine to lower blood pressure. The main idea behind the new pill is that patients would be more willing to take a single pill than 3 different ones. It is expected that the pill will consist of medicines that are now generic, and therefore the cost of the medicine would be relatively low. It is anticipated that the medicine will be available in Europe within the next 2 years. If the pill is successful in Europe, many leading cardiologists recommend its application in Asia where rates of heart disease are increasing exponentially. While the aforementioned medicines are useful in secondary prevention, others at the World Congress of Cardiology are recommending the importance of not only the type of diet that people consume but also that people pay close attention to the size of the portions that they ingest. Some heart specialists are now stating that laws to regulate the food industry be enacted.
