Laser therapies can help people with acne by improving scars and reducing the production of sebum, which is the oily substance found in pores that causes pimples and blackheads. The combination of UV light in small amounts can also be helpful in regenerating healthy pores. Laser resurfacing can help smooth the skin in patients with pitting or deep holes in the skin. Using carbon dioxide in the laser can remove just the outer skin and change the texture of non-facial scarring. The process is applied in short spurts in and around the scar area. It is performed under anesthesia in an outpatient setting. The laser session works in two ways: by treating acne and also causing stimulation of collagen cells, renewing the skin, and preventing future outbreaks. If a patient with acne becomes immune to the antibiotics that he or she has been taking over a period of time, the main alternative is laser therapy.
