25 years gone, Oppa still a flourishing memory
Palakkad : Though twenty five years have passed since Kuttimaluamma (Oppa) left us all, her memories are still intact in the minds of the people here. AV Kuttimaluamma, whom the old generation called 'Oppa' meaning sister, passed away on April 14, 1985. The life of Kuttimaulama, who was born on April 23, 1905 as the daughter of Perumbilavil Govindan Menon and Anakkara Vadakkath Madhavi Amma, is a learning text for the new generation. She dedicated her life for the land when she became the wife of Kozhippurath Madhava Menon in 1925.

In 1932 she participated in the Civil Disobedient Movement with her small kid Meenakshi and went to jail and became a guide in the freedom struggle. She also participated in Quit India Movement in 1942. She also acted as the president of Malabar Congress and was the working member of Indian National Congress.
Once Gandhiji made her sit beside him and inquired about the effect freedom movement among youngsters, which was an unforgettable episode in her life. It was Jawaharlal Nehru who took Kuttimaluamma to the working committee.
During the meet in Kozhikode, Nehru described her as a role model for every Congress activists. When the cleaners in Kozhikode went on strike, she changed their mind by doing the work of a cleaner .
She showed the world that it is not words but actions that is important. In the process of rehabilitating beggers she pleaded for rice from each house and also nursed leprosy patients. Though she studied up to 7th standard, she was able to handle around 6 languages including English.
For Kuttimaluamma Indira Gandhi was Indhu and for Indira Oppa was like her mother. Vadakkathau Veetil Chandrasekharan still remembers that incident where Indira came in a chartered flight only to see Oppa when she came to power after the defeat during Emergency.
