    28 injured in lightning in capital

    Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 28 people, including 22 students, suffered burns in the city and suburban areas when they were struck by lightning accompanied by heavy rain last evening. According to reports reaching here, the students were attending a free PSC coaching class at the Boy's UP School in Nedumangad, when lightning struck the building.

    Three people, including two women, who had accompanied their children to the school were also injured in the incident.

    All the injured were admitted to Nedumangad Taluk Government Hospital. Later, five of the seriously injured were shifted to the Medical College hospital here.

    In another lightning incident at Kulappada Pathekkar, three women were injured and were admitted to the Taluk Government Hospital.

    The city experienced heavy summer rain last evening causing water logging in many areas, including Thampanoor, Pazhavangadi and Rajaji Nagar.

    Massive damage to buildings and electrical equipment have been reported following the thundershowers.

    More than 22 houses, two of them compeletely, at Ayurveda College area and 20 partially, at Petta area, were damaged in the lightning.

    Four vehicles were damaged when trees fell on them during the rains.

    Power supply was disrupted in various parts of the city for many hours. Uprooting of a tree affected vehicular traffic in Pangod area, near here.
