Malayelee doctor invents new treatment for Parkinson's disease
Bangalore: Dr Ravi Gopal Varma, Head of Neurology, M S Ramaiah Medical College, has come up with a new treatment for Parkinson's disease which affects one in 300 people in India and more prevalent among people aged over 60 years. The treatment is called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), a surgical procedure for treatment of Parkinson's disease in which electric waves will be transferred to various part of brain . As there are no definite treatment for the disease, the DBS will l help a lot in the treatment, Varma said. The first symptom of the disease in which the patient faces obstruction in moving the body. Then he won't be able to move the hands and legs. The DBS gains priority as the number of medicines cause greater side effects and 25 per cent of Parkinson's patients fail to respond to medications or develop side effects. The main component of DBS is the Implanted Pulse Generator (IPG). Then, a lead including four platinum electrodes which are insulated with polyurethane. These lead will be connected to IPG through insulation wires. All these three will be placed in the brain through DBS surgery. Then the IPG battery treats the moving problem by transferring electric waves. A battery can work up to 5-6 years.
