    Export of coconut and coir products goes up





    Kochi: Export of Coconut and coconut products other other than coir has gone to 34.19 per cent during 2009-10 fiscal, Cococnut Board Chairman, Minnie Mathew, today said. Value wise the growth was 34 per cent and quantity wise 30
    per cent, she told reporters here. During 2009-10, about Rs 442 crore coconut and coconut products were exported against Rs 329 crore in 2008-09, she said. India was exporting to 84 coutnries with activated carbon forming a major component of the export basket worth Rs 150 crore to Rs 212 crore. Desicated coconut, ball copra, oil cake, coconut shell and
    acitivated carbon are among the products being exported. The coconut sector in the country has witnessed a
    significant growth in many areas during the past five years due to the multi pronged development activities carried out by
    Board, she said. India's coconut production which was 1283 crores in 2004-05 has increased to 1474 crores in 2007-08 registering an increase of 15 per cent. In the case of productivity also, an increase is recorded from the 6632 nuts per hectare to 7747 nuts per hectare. The major replanting and rejuvenation programme for the 3 Districts of Trivandrum, Kollam and Thrissur in Kerala and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has begun and this was a major initiative to improve productivity, she said.

    The programme aims to eradicate the debilitating root (wilt) disease which is one of the most important contributory
    factors to the fall in production and productivity in Kerala. The central government has sanctioned about rs 478 crore
    financial assistance under the project for 3 years.
