LDF to discuss how to widen its political space in Kerala

New Delhi:The Left Democratic Front (LDF)in Kerala is planning to expand its political space by roping in more parties in its fold with the coalition leaders meeting this Saturday in Thiruvananthapuram to discuss the issue. The move to induct more parties comes against the backdrop of Kerala Congress (Joseph) leaving the ruling coalition and merging his party with Kerala Congress (Mani), a constituent of Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). 'We will discuss how to expand our political base in the state. We will discuss whether new parties should be inducted,' State Education Minister M A Baby, who is here to
attend the party Central Committee meeting, told reporters. Asked about the party's strategy, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achudanandan said, 'the issue has not been discussed by the
LDF so far. When they will discuss, we will let you know.' However, a senior party leader said the situation is 'serious as people are leaving us'. 'We need to discuss the matter. It is only prudent to take the help of those who are willing to help us. The LDF will surely discuss the issue. But I cannot surely say what will be the arrangement,' he said.

A faction led P C Thomas, a former MP who was with Kerala Congress (Joseph), is likely to be inducted in the Front. The Polit Bureau, which met here two days ago, had given a green signal to the state committee to go ahead with expanding the coalition after discussing it in the LDF in Kerala. The LDF had lost a faction of JD(S) earlier.
