Elephant census begins today
Sulthan Bathrey : After the tiger census, the jumbo census began on Saturday. The census will be taken on Saturdays and Sundays. This year the census activities will be headed by the Periyar Foundation in Thekkadi. The survey is being conducted by dividing the 344.44 square kilometer reserve forest into 20 blocks, the forest area in South Wayanad forest division into 17 blocks and the forest range in North Wayanad forest division into 18 blocks. On May 15 the group will begin its journey and will record the number of elephants, age, male and female will be recorded. The Periyar Foundation will divide the forests into blocks. Apart from forest department officials, the group also includes, forestry college students and representative from the service organizations.
As per the statistics of the forest departemnt, there are 6000 elephants in Kerala forests. Though there will be slight variations during surveys, statistics show that there is always an increase in the number off elephants.
