Worst Cyclone to devastate Andhra Coast
Hyderabad: The biggest and worst cyclone since last 20 years the 'Laila' is expected to hit the Andhra coast, precisely the Island of Edurumundi in Krishna River at the sea coast by tonight. Panic situation now prevails all over Andhra Pradesh. The Chief Minister held an emergency meeting with all the ministers and officials at Secretariat and asked the Ministers to rush to the coastal districts immediately. Ministers one by one are leaving for the districts. The State cabinet also in an emergency meeting discussed about the likely devastations to be caused by the super cyclone. The 'Laila' will affect almost 10 coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh.
Preventive measures are on a war footing. Senior State officers have already left for the districts. Evacuation of thousands of people to safer places are on. Temporary shelters have been opened. National Disaster Responsive Force Units have arrived in the likely affected districts.
Army, Navy & Air Force have been asked to stand by.
Torrential rains and stormy winds lashed the coastal districts of Krishna, Guntur, East and West Godavari as the super cyclone Lailawas poised at 460 kmsWest-South West of Visakhapatnam.
It is moving now in the north westerly and north direction as it intensified at a speed of over 25 kms per hour since morning and is anticipated to cross the coast between midnight and early morning tomorrow. The gale speed is expected to cross 115 kms per hour as the cyclone crossed the main land.
The State Cabinet which held an emergency meeting in the wake of the cyclone threat decided to put off the 'rededication day' celebrations of completion of first year in its second term.
Chief Minister K Rosaiah directed ministers to rush to districts to supervise the relief and evacuation exercises. He also instructed the district collectors to begin evacuation of people living in low lying areas and set up relief camps as the news ofheavy rains and winds in the wake of approaching cyclone reached the State capital.
The people living in several islands on the East coast including Hope Island near Kakinada and China Mangodu near Pulicat Lake in Nellore district have already been evacuated to safety. Rains and 10 feet high waves have already destroyed salt pens and mango plantations in Krishna district.
About100 fishermen in 50 odd boats were also missing in Nellore district and said to have taken shelter in Chinna Mangodu island in the sea off Pulicat lake. M. Shashidhar Reddy, member of the National Disaster Management Authority said that the cyclone might cross the coast anytime between midnight of May 19 to early morning of tomorrow.
He said cyclone Laila was moving fastand brought heavy down pour and also stormy winds along with it. He said the special forces of the NDMA with boats and helicopters were being rushed from Orissa and Tamil Nadu to Andhra coast for immediate relief and rescue operations.
Describing the present cyclone as the worst and massive one in the last 20 years he said it was also 'fourth largest in the world 'on the same lines of the cyclone which hit Orissa few years a go.
