Jurist Iyer calls for guard against air crash

Kochi: In the backdrop of the Mangalore air crash which claimed 158 lives, noted jurist V R Krishna Iyer said any airport without adequate safety facilities could lead to a mass disaster and incendiary catastrophe. In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former Supreme Court Judge Iyer said '' in a democracy, there shall be no iron curtain between technological progress and travel safety. Blood and tears are not the price of material advance.'' Terming the crash day ,'black day, darkest day and a mourning day', Justice Iyer also raised doubts whether the incident was a result of negligence or systemic complacency.

''If there has been grievous default in the location and construction of the macabre Mangalore Lethal Airport, it is necessary to investigate the various dimensions of the delinquency so that a second Mangalore disaster may never be repeated on Indian soil,'' he said in the letter.

He also noted that the Kozhikode airport, as it was reported, has dangerous similarities to the Mangalore airport and before another calamity claims innocent lives, renovation must be done to prevent it.
