Hospitals become inhuman: Woman in labour made to suffer

Cherpu (Thrissur): It was a painful day by all means for Saroja, a Tamil woman, when three hospitals, including a government hospital, had shown their merciless faces against her when she was reeling under delivery pain. After a scuffle, the hospital, which was not ready to admit her, was forced to get her in and minutes after she delivered a baby boy. Thanks to the auto driver Deepu who showed a humanitarian face to the Tamil couple and fought with hospital authorities to admit Saroja. This agonizing incident happened to Saroja, wife of Govindan from Namakkal dist in Tamil Nadu, who were residing near Vallachira church. Due to labour pain she was first admitted to the Cherpu government hospital. Doctors directed Govindan to shift her to the Thrissur District Hospital. When asked for hospital ambulance, the hospital authorities stated that the driver was not there. Deepu who was sure that it is not easy to transport the woman writhing in pain to Thrissur in a auto, took them to a private hospital in Urakam. But they said that there was no doctor. When he contacted a service organisation ACTS in Cherpu unit for their ambulance, they replied that ambulance for delivery purpose are not given. Then Deepu rushed them to Cherpu private hospital. Though a gynaecologist was present in the hospital, the authorities did not open its door for them.

In the midst of all this, none of the hospital authorities helped Saroja who was reeling under severe pain on the stairs of the hospital. Deepu rushed to the Cherpu police station only to find the police leaving to solve a clash in Oorakam. Then Deepu and others had a scuffle with the hospital authorities and they said that as they do not have the previous records of Saroja she can't be admitted there.

Saroja, who was then in the final stage of her delivery, was admitted to the hospital and delivered a baby boy within 10 minutes. Immediately after the incident, the couple had to deposit a fee of Rs 5000. She was discharged from the hospital on Monday.
