Use Lanka Prez visit to convey speedy rehabilitation of Tamils
Chennai: CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat today said India must use the June 8 visit of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse to 'unambiguously' convey to him that high priority should be accorded to speedy rehabilitation of displaced Tamils, a political solution for them and return of normalcy in Tamil-speaking areas. 'This is the time and opportunity for the Government of India to take up the issues of speedy rahabilitation and
return of normalcy in Tamil speaking areas. After all India has helped in this process by way of funds and material,' he
said, delivering an address on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, organised by the state committee of CPI(M).
Calling for a political solution where minority Tamils can get their due rights and autonomy within the constitutional
framework of Sri Lanka, Karat said this must be accorded 'urgent priority'.
'The Indian government also has the responsibility to convey to Sri Lanka that the political solution for the Tamils
is the wish of India, especially people of Tamil Nadu. This visit by President Rajapakse must be utilised by India to
unambiguously convey these and I hope it does,' he added.
Alleging that many Tamils are still languishing in camps, he said talk of political devolution has been brushed aside in
the hysteria built up in the military offensive in the post-war scenario, following the decimation of LTTE.
Contrary to the rulers' claims, federalism would bind people together and not compromise upon national sovereignty,
Karat said. He said democratic forces in the Sinhala and Tamil communities understood the need for a political settlement,
and added. 'We should help in that process by giving our solidarity and support.' PTI
