Kannur : The reason for lack of popularity of football in India was Goverment negligence, FIFA Appeal Committee Member P P Lakshmanan said today.
Talking to newspersons here, he claimed that during his tenure as Secretary of All India Football Federation (1988-1996), India's position in FIFA ranking was 100th, but now it had reached at 135th position.
Claiming that his effort to provide training to the youths at the age of below 15 years gave birth to talented players like I M Vijayan, V P Sathyan and many other professionals, he said, media was also abstaining from criticising government negligence.
He said two persons from India -- P P Lakshmanan and Union Minister Praful Patel -- would leave to South Afrcia to attend the world cup.
Lakshmanan said the main duty of the FIFA Appeal Committe was to take decison over the petitions of the countries which were not satisfied about the decison of the match referee.
About 2,80,000 police personnel were deployed for the smmoth conduct of the world cup, he said.
To a question, he said in India, Kerala was the only state to host World Cup touranments. Minimum eight stadiums were necessary to conduct such mega tournament, he added.
In Kerala, stadiums in Thiruvanthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur could reconstruct with world class facility to conduct such events, he said.
