Sampath custody death: Govt files appeal in HC

Kochi: The state government has filed an appeal in the Kerala High Court questioning the transfer of probe on the custodial death of Sampath to CBI. Vijay Sakhare, who was the Palakkad SP during that time, filed an appeal in the HC the other day . The appeals will be taken up for consideration on Thursday. The Government in its appeal stated that the crime branch had included 14 policemen, including DySP and the CI, in the accused list after thorough investigation of the crime. The Government claimed that there is no basis in suspecting Sakhare based on the statement of Kanakaraj. Kanakaraj in his statement said that when Sampath was taken into custody there was a higher police official who was speaking Malayalam and Hindi. If situation warrants to include the police official in the accused list he would also be included. The Government also questioned the act of the court in mentioning the name of Sakhare mainly on suspicion. The appeal also mentioned a Supreme Court order asking courts to refrain themselves in such circumstances.
