Thiruvananthapuram : Amid reports of frequent attacks by wild elephants in human inhabitations, Forest Minister Binoy Viswam told the state Assembly today that the government would hike the ex gratia to the next of kin of those trampled to death by wild elephants to Rs two lakh from Rs one lakh. Replying to a calling attention motion by Mr Aryadan Mohammed of the Congress, the Minister said he would convene a meeting of MLAs representing areas close to forest here on July 12 to discuss various issues relating to attacks of wild animals on people.
He said immediate measures would be taken to ensure the safety of people living in areas prone to wild elephant attacks.
The government would consider digging elephant-proof trench and electric fencing in such areas, he said.
