Uproar in house over CM's slip of tongue remark on Rajeev
Thiruvananthapuram: The opposition on Friday created an uproar in the assembly on a comment made by chief minister V S Achuthanandan. While mentioning about emergency, the CM wrongly uttered the name of Rajiv Gandhi instead of Sanjay Gandhi which irked the Opposition, Assembly procedings came to a halt. Though the CM corrected his mistake, the opposition was not ready for a consensus.
The CM made the controversial comment while furnishing a reply to an adjournment motion forwarded by V D Satheeshan, MLA alleging that the CPM have been humiliating the courts. The CM said that Congress does not have the right to protest against those who criticizes courts.
When VS said that during emergency the goons of Rajiv Gandhi had blocked Justice V R Krishna Iyer, chaos prevailed in the house. VS immediately corrected his comment saying that he meant Sanjay Gandhi and not Rajeev. But when the Opposition continued its havoc, the assembly was adjourned for the day.
Opposition leader Oommen Chandy alleged that the government did not allow them to discuss an important issue affecting the judiciary. He added that the CM had committed a grave mistake by mentioning the name of Rajeev Gandhi who became a martyr. That is a shame for the state, he said.
He added that on one side they are trying to humiliate the court with the help of power and on the other side they are putting people in a dilemma by imposing hartals.
