P Kerala Varma Raja passses away
Poonjar: The head of Poonjar Kovilakam P Kerala Varma Raja passed away on Monday at `Sudhrama' Palace . He was 89. His wife is Kanakakunjamma. Son P K Premachandran and daughters-in-law Rama and Vimala and grand son Arun were beside him when he passed away. It was in March 2006 that he became the head of Poonjar royal family. He was born on February 26 1921 as the son of Poonjar Koyikkal Palace Puthussery Narayanan Nampoothiri and Karthikathirunal Ambathampuratty . He studied at Thriuvananthapuram Maharajas Science college and Ernakulum Maharajas College., Later he took diploma in forestry form Thiruvananthapurm university college
In 1960 he began hotel Imperial. He also worked as Aluva Thanthra Vidhya Peeth patron, convener of Acharya Sadassu, Sport Trust presidnet of Poonjar and manager of Poonjar SMV School.
Kerala Varma Raja was the younger brother of Goda Varma Raja and was one of the few among his peers who was active in politics during the last century which saw significant changes in the socio-economic life of the highly rigid caste system in Kerala.
In the post-Independence period, the Raja had aligned himself with the Hindu Munnani and had contested unsuccessfully as its candidate in the 1984 Lok Sabha elections from Thiruvananthapuram segment.
He again tried his luck at the hustings from the Thiruvananthapuram West Assembly segment in 1987, but without success.
The Raja's most memorable electoral contest was in 1998 when he entered the fray as a BJP candidate and contested against K. Karunakaran to the Lok Sabha. He was with the Forests and Wildlife Department before entering active public life.
