248 Pak citizens of Kerala origin staying in the state: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 248 Pakistani citizens who have their origins in Kerala are residing in the state, many
of them waiting for Indian citizenship, state assembly was informed today. With 154 Kannur district accounted for the highest number of Pakistani nationals, followed by Malappuram with 70, Home Minister
Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told the assembly in a written reply.

Applications of at least 119 people for Indian citizenship had been forwarded to the Centre through district collectors concerned.
Among them 57 were from Kannur and 53 from Malappuram, he said.

Many of them became Pakistan citizens as they happened to be there during partition. But they continue to have their roots and
family connections in Kerala, he said.

It was for the Centre to relax conditions of residential permits for those who had crossed 65 years and exempt them from 'stringent' stipulations like periodical visit to police stations to sign registers, he said. PTI
