Stop the mangrove park construction in Pappinisseri: Environment ministry

New Delhi: The Union ministry of Environment has ordered all construction works relating to mangrove theme park in Pappinisseri and Kannur to be stopped. The direction was given to the Pappinissery eco tourism president, its members and vice-president Ajaykumar. On July 9, `Mathrubhumi' had reported the findings of a central team which found that the mangrove park was being constructed illegally. The action is being taken on the basis of that findings. The president of the State Coastal Zone Management Authority has been entrusted with the charge to conduct a study on what will be the consequences of setting up a theme park at a place which comes under the purview of Coastal Regulatory Zone rules. He has been directed to submit the report within 15 days. He can also seek the help of scientists in the Centre for Earth Science Studies and officers in the forest department.

It was K Sudhakaran, MP, who had filed a complaint with the union ministry alleging that the theme park was against the Coastal regulatory zone rules. Following this, the ministry had sought a report from the forest chief conservator of Bangalore regional office. The report was given by scientist Dr S Susarla after visiting the spot.

The report stated that floating restaurants and other buildings were built at the mangroves. The report states that the constructions changed the usual flow of sea water and made 950 meter bunds and 2-3 meter wide roads. The report also submitted the notice issued by eco tourism society, which stated that health club, food court, recreation centre for kids, biotech toilets will be constructed.

The report points out that the area which comes under the Coastal Regulator Zone -1 has high environmental importance. A writ petition was also filed in the Kerala High Court. Earlier, Kannur district environment committee had field a complaint against the construction.

The central ministry has found that eco tourism society revoked the CRZ rules in 1991. If it does not abide by the direction of the ministry, it will take action as per Section 15 of the Environmental Protection Act .
