Kerala aims at self sufficiency in vegetable production

Thiruvananthapuram : The Kerala government, with an aim to make the state self sufficient in vegetable production, intends to increase the production of vegetables to 3.25 lakh tonnes, Agriculture Minister Mullakakara Ratnakaran told the state Assembly today. Replying to a calling attentionnotion, he stressed the need for growing vegetables in all houses to enable the state to become self sufficient in vegetable production.

''If each family grows vegetables at his/her land, even if it is only one cent, the state could become self sufficient in vegetable production in a span of four years,''he said.

As a step towards self-sufficiency in vegetable production, the government would also encourage vegetable cultivation in all houses in 150 panchayats
