No more Plastic carrybags in Guruvayur

Thrissur: Plastic carrybags will soon be thing of the past in the Temple town of Guruvayur in Kerala, which houses the famous Lord Krishna shrine, with authorities deciding to do away with it from July one. Chairperson of the Guruvayur Municipal Council, Geeta Gopi told reporters here today that with the decision not to use plastic carry bags and covers, the authorities have succeeded in ensuring that at least a million such articles have not been used in the last one month in the holy town. There are about 22000 persons in an area of 7.46 square km and 25.5 lakh pilgrims visit the shrine daily from all over the country. A large quantity of plastic carry-bags and covers were in use, making the temple town a plastic dumpyard, creating problems for the residents and visitors, she said. Under these circumstances, it was decided jointly by the Municipal
council and the Guruvayur Devaswom that it was essential for freeing the town from the plastic waste and garbage.

Over 90 per cent shop-owners in Guruvayur have stopped selling plastic carry bags and covers since July first. The Guruvayur Dewaswom has also switched over to paper and cloth bags for distributing 'prasadams' to pilgrims. Over 35,000 plastic covers and bags had earlier been sold out per day in different shops and stores. To create awaresness among the public, 25 green volunteers would be deployed in each ward. Gopi said that the official communications would be sent to the Southern states seeking their co-operation in the endeavour to make guruvayur plastic free.
