    Steps taken to construct new dam at Mullaperiyar

    Thiruvananthapuram: Water Resources Minister N K Preamchandran today informed the assembly that government was
    taking all administrative and legal steps to construct a new dam at Mullaperiyar in place of the 113-year old present structure. Kerala government was of the view that new dam was necessary as any kind of strengthening of the existing dam would not ensure safety of the existing dam, Preamchndran said while replying to a calling attention of Roshy Augustine.

    Augustine wanted to strengthen the Mullaperiyar dam and to increase the efficiency of the security system.

    Stating that security system of dams in the state has been strengthened in the wake of directive issued by Centre following terrorist threat.

    Mullaperiyar Dam was under 'A' category of security, he said. In this context, Preamchandran said Tamil Nadu was not co-operating with Kerala in providing additional security to Mullaperiyar dam on which dispute exist between Kerala and Tamil Nadu over the construction of new dam.

    Tamil Nadu eve wanted to remove Kerala police from the dam cite, he said. However, Kerala government was providing all security to the dam even though it had limitations, he said. PTI
