Thiruvananthapuram: Ego problems among film artistes, directors and producers had resulted in Trade Union issues cropping
up in film organisations which were part of the Malayalam movie industry, noted Director Siby Malayil said. Organisations were meant for protecting the interests of artistes, producers and directors, which later turned out to result in a clash of interests. 'This is not a desirable trend,' Malaylil told reporters here today. He said earlier storylines were more important than the cast
of a film. However, with the formation of organisations, film artistes would have to work within their framework, he said, hinting at the row involving actor Thilakan who was recently expelled from the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes for issuing statments against the outfit. New films with different themes were not being accepted in the market as the film scene was dominated by superstars, he said.
The producers were for the superstars as they thought they are assured of a desired success of a film in terms of finances, he said. 'This situation has to be changed by promoting films like my new production `Apoorva Ragam' in which only new artistes are cast,' he said. Asif Ali, Nishal, Vinay and Nithya Menon are the new faces in the film which is attracting critical attention.
To a question, Asif Ali said they chose the negative roles in the film just because they were interested in performances rather
than stardom
