Feroke: Veteran actress Santha Devi, who immortalized many roles in silver screen and theatres, is reeling under pain of solitude. This loving mother character is still eagerly awaiting for more roles to portray even though she is suffering from age-old hardships. Earlier, she was residing with her elder son Suresh Babu and family and when they shifted to Selem, she was not able to cop up with her ailments in her home in Nallalam.
When her son and family shifted they had locked some rooms leaving Santha Devi in the dining room. The awards and accolades lie scattered in the next room. She is unable to cook food for herself and the only solace is the food given to her by neighbours.
She is suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure. She finds it difficult to walk or raise her leg due to an injury in her leg. She fell many times while trying to walk with the help of a stick.
The last film which she acted was `Bridge' a short film among the collection of short films in `Kerala Caf' by Renjith. In that film she portrays the role of a mother abandoned by her son. Now in real life too she faces such a situation.
She had won national award for best supporting actress for the film `Yamanam' in 1992. In the midst of all these sufferings too, she does not want to blame anyone who alienated her. She acted in more than 480 films, received fellowship from Kerala Sangeeth Nataka Akademi , many awards and accolades, but it seems that her companions too had forgotton her. Her only solace is the role she gets rarely.
Now her only comfort is her grandchild who is with her in her house. Vijayalakshmi, wife of Nilambur Balan, and Nilambur Ayisha visited Santha Devi on Monday. A private hospital had also offered free treatment. But she fears that if she is confined to the hospital she might lose some chances.
