Consensus reached on single phase panchayat polls

An all party meeting convened by State Election Commission has reached a concensus to hold one phase
poll to local bodies in the state. All Political parties opposed the suggestion of State Election Commission to hold the local body polls two phases citing various reasons.

Talking to reporters after the meeting,CPI-M leader Anathalavattom Anandan,MLA, said representatives of all political parties wanted the Commission to hold the poll in one phase.

Following this, the polls scheduled to be held in September was likely to be postponed to October, official sources said.

The commission would infrom the outcome of the meeting to government, sources said.

The State Election Commission had a few days back informed the government that it was not possible to hold local body elections in 22 civic bodies in September in the wake of a High Court order connected with delimitation of 14 block panchayats.

The Commission said it would not be feasible to hold polls in one phase to all local bodies as it would take a minimum of one month for reorganisation of block panchayats in question as directed by the High Court.

The all party meeting of political parties was convened in this back ground to elicite the views of parties.

Elections to civic bodies are due in September and new councils have to assume office on October 2 as per law.

Official sources said administerator would be appointed in local bodies during the period between Oct 2 to till the new councils assume office. PTI
