Woman burnt to death as mentally ill son sets house on fire

Varkala: A woman was burnt to death when her son, who is mentally challenged, torched the house. The deceased is Devakiamma, 75, residing near Edava Venkulam school. Her body has been completely charred to an unidentifiable state. Later the natives tied down her son Subhash, 45 and Varkala police arrested him. Devaki was residing alone with her son and no one else was residing there. After going to sleep after dinner, her son put clothes under her cot and set fire to it. Though the natives tried to douse the fire, the attempt went futile. When the fireforce team from Varkala extinguished the fire, the room was completely gutted. Subhash, who was in Gulf for some time, returned and was not in a good mental state. Her husband is Vasudevan Pillai and children Sujatha, Sathyakumari, Sajeev, Suresh Babu and Unnikrishnan.
