New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Kerala government to drop further proceedings with regard to implementing high security number plates for vehicles in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode cities. The bench comprising chief justice S H Kapadia and justice K S Radhakrishanan ordered to begin the tender proceeding within two months. The scheme for high security number plates will be extended to other cities in different phases. The direction was given as part of further proceedings on a petition field by Youth Congress former president Maneendarjith Singh Bitta in 2008. K
Kerala standing counsel Adv G Prakash informed SC that the state would need Rs 600 crore for the project and which must be collected from the vehicle owners. For four wheelers Rs 1600 would be needed and for two-three wheelers Rs 750. There only one or two companies which are producing such plates. Kerala, also said that the state do not wish to pose such a burden to the general public. In Kerala there are 15 lakh four-wheelers and 40 lakh two wheelers. Each year five lakh new vehicles are being registered.

Stickers and adhesive labels will not be permitted on number plates.
The plate shall bear a permanent consecutive identification number of minimum seven digits, which will be laser-branded into the reflective sheeting and hot-stamping film shall bear a verification inscription.The plate shall be fastened with non-removable snap lock fitting system on the rear of the vehicle.Rule 50 of the CMV Act also specifies the dimensions of the number plates meant for two-wheelers and four-wheelers.
