    Former CPI-M MP joins Congress

Thiruvananthapuram:Former Lok Sabha member Dr K S Manoj, who quit CPI-M last year resenting the party's approach
towards faith, has joined the Congress. Manoj, who won Alappuzha Lok Sabha seat in 2004 on the CPI-M ticket
but was defeated in the last polls, was given the primary membership of the Congress by District Congress Committee President A A Shukkoor at Alappuzha yesterday. Manoj resgined from the CPI-M protesting its stand, adopted as part of the 'rectification' process, that those holding responsible organisational positions should refrain from openly poractising or participating in religious ceremonies.

Manoj, a medical doctor who entered public life as an activist of Catholic Youth Movement, said held that he was a believer and
he could not agree with the party's line of the issue of faith.

The CPI(M) leadership, however, maintained that party did not come in the way of religious freedom of anybody but that certain norms were suggested to strengthen the Marxist orientation of the party functionaries at various levels.

Accepting the Congress membership, Manoj said he recgonized that Congress was the only party in the country capable of upholding secular and democratic values without compromising the Indian ethos.

Those who present on the occasion included sitting Lok Sabha member from Alappuzha, K C Venugopal, who defeated Manoj in 2009 polls. In a similar instance, former CPI-M MP from Kannur, A P Abudlla Kutty, who is now a Congress MLA, is releasing tomorrow his political autobiography 'You made me a Congressman,' a title which parodied the famous Malayalam play of 1940s 'Ningalenne Communistacki' (You made me a Communist), a play by Thoppil Bhasi which helped the Left
to strike roots in the state.

Abdullakutty, who won twice from Kannur on CPI-M ticket, was expelled from the party on the eve of the last Lok Sabha polls, after a long-drawn tussle with the leadership.

Abdullakutty raised hackles from the party circles for praising the developmental model of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. He straightaway joined the Congress after his expulsion from the CPI-M and got elected to the state assembly through a by-election from Kannur.PTI
