Thiruvananthapuram: Around 2.25 crore voters will cast their votes in the upcoming polls to local self governments and the cost expected is Rs 65 crore. The polls will also require the services of 2.5 lakh officials.
Earlier, there were 999 grama panchayats. In some places, panchayats were converted into corporation while the rest were attached to corporations. With this the number had declined to 978. The number of corporations rose to 60 from 53.
In grama panchayats, 16,646 members will be selected and among them 8613 would be women. In Thiruvananthapuram corporation alone, new generation voting machines would be used. Appointing government officers for poll duties would also be computerized. A software named e-drop has been formed with the help of National Informatics Centre. Each employee will get poll duty within the limits of the adjacent LSG.
