    HC upholds acquittal of DGP Prem Shankar in Maniyeri Madhavan case

    Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Thursday upheld the decision of the Ernakulam session court which acquitted former DGP Prem Shankar in Maniyeri Madhavan lock up torture case. Earlier, the Ernakulum chief judicial magistrate court sentenced the other accused for six months, including Kannur former SP and present Kerala Film Development Corporation MD K G Prem Shankar, KA Abdul Gafoor who was Kannur town police station the then SI, P Jayarajan, who was the CI, R P Kunjiraman, SI . In an appeal against the same, the Ernakulum additional sessions court judge acquitted Prem Shankar and Jayarajan and the other two were sentenced for a day. In this Madhavan's wife Nalini approached the HC questioning the same. Justice VK Mohanan issued an order rejecting the petitions. The incident occurred on February 12, 1968. Madhavan who was editor of `Sudhinam', a Malayalam daily which published the news of rape of a tribal girl. Police booked a case against Madhavan by preparing a complaint in the name of the girl's father. The case against police was that they tortured Madhavan in lock up and in police jeep and later Madhavan died.
