Thiruvananthapuram: `Rithu' (Season), directed by noted film-maker Shyamaprasad was adjudged the best Malayalam film of the year 2009 in the first Surya TV awards announced here today. Shyamaprasad was also chosen as the best director for the film. `Pazhassi Raja' by Hariharan was chosen as the best popular film with artistic value. Mammootty was selected as the best actor for his roles in `Paleri Manikyam,' `Pazhassi Raja' and `Loudspeaker,' while Padmapriya was chosen the best female actor for her performances in `Pazhassi Raja' and `Bhoomi Malayalam.' Ranjith Sanker is the best debutant director (Passenger). Sreekumar was chosen the best male playback singer while Shreya Ghoshal was adjudged the best female playback singer.
Eminent director T V Chandran would get a special jury award for excellence in cinema, while media personality Sasikumar would get a special award for acting (Loudspeaker). K J Yesudas (playback singing) and O N V Kurup (lyrics) would
also get special jury awards for their contributions. Other awardees: Indrans (second best actor), Swetha Menon (second
best female actor), Jagadish (comedy actor), Jagathy Sreekumar (villain), Baby Nivedita (child artiste), Nishan, Archana Kavi (debutant actors), Jayaraj, P Y Jose (Story), M T Vasudevan Nair (script), Girish Puthanchery (lyrics).
M Jayachandran (music direction), Bijipal (background music), Ajayan Vincent (cinematography), Beena Paul (editing), Muthuraj (art direction), George (make-up), Natarajan (costume design), Shanthikumar (choreography), Shoby Thilakan, Sreedevi (dubbing artistes), Harikumar (sound mixing) and Reema Kallingal (special award for acting). The awards were announced by Jury chairman and eminent actor Madhu at a press conference here today. The awards, jointly instituted by Surya TV and Kerala Film Producers' Association would be distributed at a star-studded function in Kochi on October 15, Vijay Babu, vice president (programmes), Surya TV said. The cash prizes of each award would be announced later, he aid.
