Kozhikode: The Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (IMHANS) in Kozhikode has been given the status of Centre of Excellence by the Union Health Ministry and have alloted a fund of Rs 30 crore for improving mental health treatment in Kerala. The fund would be utilized for the development of IMHANS. Union health minister Gulam Nabi Azad signed the order ending uncertainty over the same.
An amount of Rs 5.2 crore would be released as first instalment. It was after crossing many hurdles that the central heath director recommended CoE status to IMHANS on September 4, 2009. Due to technical snags the project allocation was delayed. Now the efforts from M K Raghavan MP and the state government proved fruitful.
IMHANS has been functioning in one room inside the Kuthiravattom mental health centre without much facilities. It's main function is in community psychiatric area and is worth commendable. M K Raghavan MP said that the centre's nod is the result of a petition given directly to Gulam Nabi Azad. A Pradeep Kumar MLA said the efforts of the state government also proved fruitful.
