Malappuram: Indian Medical Council directed IMA to cancel the pact with Pepsi for endorsing its products. The directive was made as the pact revoked IMC moral code of conduct of 2002 and 2009. The medical council meet on November 9 would take decision of any action to be taken against IMA. On October 12, council had asked the IMA secretary to present the pact entered with Pepsi. Council issued directive after that. Earlier IMC issued show cause notice in which IMA gave reply that it was not endorsing commercial products. At that time the IMC head by Kethan Desai stated that 2009 moral code of conduct is applicable only to persons and not for organizations, so no action can be taken against IMA.
Later government dispersed the committee lead by Kethan Desai. When the new council came to force, a re-probe was conducted after intervention from National Human Rights commission, Central Information commission and Central heath ministry. Currently IMC took action on the basis of complaint by IMA central committee member Dr K V Babu in June 2008 questioning IMA's stand of endorsing commercial products.
