Mumbai: Maharashtra governor K Sankaranarayanan said that Gandhiji became a great encouragement for world leaders like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela and the visit by US president Barack Obama to the Mani Bhavan also points out the same. He was speaking at the 75th anniversary celebrations of Gandhiji's visit to Mathrubhumi here on Saturday. The world now is praising Gandhiji's life and actions.
We should again present it for the upcoming generations. It is our responsiblity to make the youth acquainted with Gandhiji's letters. Mathrubhumi Managing director MP Veerendrakumar pointed out that Mumbai was the centre of freedom struggle and during that time Gandhiji communicated with Mathrubhumi from here. He added that his teachings have relevance even at this time. It was this encouragement which made Mathrubhumi fight against the corporate sector which are making natural resources like water a commercial product.
Mani Bhavan director Dr Ushaben Thakoor was the chief guest and Dr Azgar Ali, engineer, delivered the main speech. The function also felicitated freedom fighters like Thakurdas Bang, Suman Bang, Dr G G Pareekh, Draupadi Ben Jesubhai Patel, Arunaben Purohith and Santhi C Patel.
Leela Sarkar released the book `Gandhi-Tolstoy Letters' by handing over a copy to noted writer Prabha Narayanapillai. Mathrubhumi managing editor PV Chandran welcomed the gathering.
