Malappuram : Two-time MLA Manjalamkuzhi Ali, who recently quit the ruling LDF and gave up his assembly membership following a tiff with the CPI-M leadership, is likely to join Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) before the assembly polls due early next year.
Ali, a businessman turned politician who won the last two assembly polls from Mankada defeating IUML nominees, had openly
campaigned for the Congress-led UDF in the civic polls last month after snapping ties with the LDF.
Since then,Ali had been in touch with top IUML leaders but both sides had so far refrained from making any open
commitment on his joining the party.
However, according to top IUML sources, in the post-civic poll scenario, Ali had almost made up his mind to join IUML
after prodding the mind of a majority of his personal following in his home segment as well as other parts of the
district.
According to a senior IUML leader, if Ali decides to join the League, the party would not be averse to field him in an
assembly seat in the district which has been held by the LDF for the last two elections.
The thinking in the party is that Ali's clout as a selfless social and charity worker and his acceptance among all communities would make a sure bet in any seat in the district.
'We hope that he would be making an announcement soon. Our meetings have been extremely friendly and fruitful, though we
don't want to term them as formal discussions at this stage', a senior IUML leader told PTI.
Ali was elected to the assembly in 2006 as a CPI(M)-backed independent from Mankada defeating senior IUML leader and
former minister M K Muneer by over 5000 votes. However, the LDF fortunes had been reversed in last month's civic poll in
the area, widely seen as a result of the 'Ali effect'.PTI
