Athletics coach Snesarev unhappy with AFI

New Delhi: India's foreign athletics coach Nikolai Snesarev, who played a crucial role in the success of middle-distance runners at the Asian Games and whose contract is up for renewal, is unhappy as the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has offered him just a three-month extension. Snesarev told IANS from Bangalore that he has already received offers from six Asian countries.

'An AFI official called me and said that they are planning to give me a three-month contract. But I don't want that. It won't do any good to me or the athletes. I can't prepare the athletes for the London Olympics,' Snesarev said.

He wants the AFI to decide quickly if they want to retain him till the 2012 London Olympics.

'I am yet to hear anything final from the AFI. Time is running out for me. If they are willing to extend my contract they have to sit down with me. But they are not showing any interest. I am going back to Belarus on December 5 and have to finalise the issue by then. I have to think about other offers as well,' Snesarev said.

India's middle-distance runners were the surprise package of the record Asian Games haul, winning two gold, two silver and one bronze at Guanghzou.

The Belarussian, however, said that he was looking forward to work with Indian athletes till the 2012 Olympics.

'I want to stay till the Olympics, because I had a great time working with the Indian athletes. They are hardworking and have the potential to do well at the international stage. They have proved themselves at the Asian Games,' he said.

National coach Bahadur Singh said he will sit down with AFI secretary general Lalit Bhanot to assess Snesarev's performance.

'I will discus with Mr.Bhanot in a couple of days to decide on Nikolai's contract. And when we meet the sports ministry officials on Dec 3, we can take this case forward,' he said.
