Thrissur: Home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that a special police team would probe the theft of the three holy ''Lyrics'' (mortal remains), relating to the death of Jesus Christ, kept at Holi Cross Church at Mappranam, near Irinjalakkuda in the district. The Lyrics were found missing on Tuesday. He said a special squad led by Thrissur SP has been formed and the government is viewing the matter vey seriously. The holy Lyrics were kept inside the church since it had been given by the then Pope with his own signature during the 18th century.
Though the thieves had separated the 'panchaloha' cross from its fixed position, installed by the Chera King according to Hindu tradition, it was found abandoned in the church.
The Mappranam Holy cross is the only church in Asia where the three holy lyrics were kept. According to church sources, the mortal remains were taken by the thieves after breaking the lock of the chest, in which the Lyrics were kept. The robbers have not taken anything else.
The holy lyrics include the cross where Christ was crucified, the scarf which Veronica used to wipe the face of Jesus Christ and blood which was smeared in the spear. The matter came to light when the church helper, who had come to the church at 5.25 am, found the door broken. It is suspected that the thieves might have entered using the ladder on the back side of the church.
The other day, two people had come to the church and enquired about the importance of holy lyrics and another person asked about the way to the backside of the church.
