Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan has demanded the Centre sanction Rs 100 crore for the rehabilitation of Endosulfan victims in the State.
Deploring the Centre's move to appoint a new panel to study the effects of Endosulfan, which caused painful death of 500 people in 11 panchayats of Kasargode District, he said many studies in this context had already proved the pesticide was harmful to human beings, he said in press release here yesterday.
As most of the countries had banned Endosufan, the Centre's decision to conduct another study on the risks posed by the pesticide was aimed at protecting the interest of Endosulfan makers, the Chief Minister said.
The Centre's move amounted to a challenge and mockery of the affected people, he added.
Meanwhile, Congress Leader V M Sudheeran said Congress President Sonia Gandhi had forwared his letter to the Union Agriculture Minister, seeking national ban on Endosulfan and relief package for the victims.
The letter also urged the Centre to change India's stand and support global ban of Endosulfan at the Stockholm Convention.
