Plantation Corp MD removed; Subair Khan is new MD

Thiruvananthapuram: The government has removed Plantation Corporation MD N K Manoj from his post on Friday. KLDC managing director Subair Khan will replace Manoj as the new Plantation Corporation MD. Agricultural minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran signed the order in this regard.

Earlier, the government was planning to remove Manoj because he had given an affidavit to the court favoring endosulfan which was contrary to the government stand. He said the government will make changes in the affidavit submitted by the Corporation and would also seek legal advice. Manoj had already filed a letter to shift him from the post when the incident became controversial.

On Thursday the Plantation Corporation in its affidavit submitted in HC stated that the company is not responsible to pay compensation to the endosulfan victims. The company also said that it had not violated any laws.

In the affidavit the company had stated it had followed all rules and regulations. The state govt had earlier filed an affidavit in the court and the company's affidavit is in reply to that.

Endosulfan was sprayed in the plantations under the direction of the central agency. Endosulfan is a fatal pesticide and all precautions should be taken before spraying it. It was sprayed not only under the direction of the company but also
With the help of experts' advice and also the central agricultural ministry.

According to the central pesticide law, endosulfan has not been banned. Hence the company has not flouted any rules and not done any wrong. Hence the need to set up a tribunal and offer compensation to the victims should be stayed, the company said in its affidavit.
