Trade union workers protest petrol price hike

Thiruvananthapuram : Protesting against the hike in the price of petrol by the Centre, workers of trade unions, including Motor Workers Union Coordination Committee, CITU, INTUC, AITUC, BMS and other trade unions, burnt effigies, staged protest marches and dhrnas in front of Accountant General (AG) office here today. The agitators burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Petroleum Minister Murli Deora in protest against the hike as part of auto-taxi strike.

They demanded provision of more subsidy to stall the price hike, increase in auto-taxi fares, withdrawal of user's fee levied by the regional transport offices, immediate repair of damaged roads and withdrawal of decision to make fare-metres mandatory.

They also threatened to go on an indefinite strike from December 29 if their demands were not met.

Following the strike, autorickshaws and taxies remained off roads, creating hardship for public.

Various organisations, including DYFI, SUCI, SFI, UTUC, STU, HMS and SCU were also participating in the strike.

They took out demonstrations at several places in the city.

However, Kerala Transport Minister Jose Thettayl said the Government would not discuss the price hike issue with the agitators as the Government was waiting for a report from Justice Ramachandran Commission in this regard.
