Kochi : In a very rare and complicated surgery, a team of neurosurgeons in a private hospital here, headed by Dr Kishan Das, removed big tumours in the head and face of a 68 year-old woman.
Claiming that this was a very rare case of large tumour extending into the brain and face, he said only seven such cases had been reported in the world. This was the first case in India.
The patient came to the hosptial in a semi-conscious state. A CT scan showed a large tumour in the frontal region of the brain and extending down into the face-orbit, nose and sinus, he said.
Intially, on the basis of scan reports it was thought to be cancerous. As the patient's condition was bad, the surgeons decided to remove the tumour in the head, he said and added the tumour in the head was removed surgically in an operation lasting eight hours.
As the tumour was benign it was decided that the one extending down from the brain into the face had to be removed.
However, as the condition of the patient was bad, the team later decided to remove it after the patient recovered from the first operation.
After one week, her condition improved and the doctors along with the facio-maxillary surgeon Dr Jacob Chako performed the second operation on the face, splitting it open in the centre and removing the tumour in a five hour-long surgery.
The patient was in good health conditin now, Dr Kishan Das said.
