Mattancherry: As there is a ban on import of palm oil via Kochi port, oil is now being transported to Kochi by rails. Palm oil which is imported to Thoothukudy, Mangalore and Kandla, are transported to Kochi through railway. Palm oil is stored in the huge tanks set up by private companies.
The state government have imposed a ban on the import of palmolin for the welfare of coconut farmers. The ban is only for import through Kochi port. To cover this technical problem, oil is imported from other ports and brought to Kochi by rail. There are no legal restrictions for it.
Palm oil was stored in huge tanks set up by companies in the ports with huge investments when there was heavy demand for it. WIth the ban, companies are finding it difficult as the transporting charges are high and are forced to store the oil in Kochi. Also it is difficult to close down the tanks.
