Karippur airport dvpt: 157 acre land to be acquired

Thiruvananthapuram: The cabinet on Wednesday decided to acquire 157 acres of land for the further development of Karippur airport. For the purpose a special land acquisition unit lead by deputy collector would be constituted. The cabinet also decided to implement a rehabilitation package. Twenty-five new posts would be created in the Revenue Department to introduce the unit. The land to be acquired belonged to various survey numbers in Pallickal village in Tirurangadi taluk in Malappuram district. Industries Minister Elamaram Karim would be in charge of the initiatives involved in implementing the Karipur airport expansion programme. Out of the total area of 157 acres, 137 acres was for the expansion of the airport and the remaining for rehabilitating 176 families that had to be shifted from the area.

Each family being shifted from the area would get up to 10 cents of land free. The process of shifting the families from the acquired area would be undertaken only after all these families were properly rehabilitated.
The government would permit the shifted families to take, without charging any amount, all useable materials from their acquired buildings when the buildings are dismantled for clearing the area for the airport.
The Minister said the families could also harvest all their agricultural crops from the acquired land before they were shifted from the area. Value of the properties being acquired would be fixed through negotiated settlement. The government would provide facilities such as new roads, electricity and water supply to the area earmarked for rehabilitating the families. The government would also recommend to the Airports Authority of India that one member from each of these families, depending on his or her qualification, be given priority over other candidates in appointment to any job vacancy that would arise in the airport and institutions connected to it. Land acquisition procedures and rehabilitation initiatives would be on fast-track mode, he added.
