Thiruvananthapuram: The committee which had conducted a study on teaching Malayalam in schools had recommended making Malayalam compulsory in all schools. The committee recommended that till Xth standard Malayalam must be taught as first language and in XI and XII th, there must be a facility to study Malayalam.
The committee also recommended that no opportunity would be given to pass Xth standard without learning Malayalam. In Higher Secondary Schools, Malayalam must be included as optional language for students to choose. The same system at present exists in state syllabus. The committee had recommended giving opportunity to study Malayalam in ICSE and CBSE syllabus also.
The committee led by R V G Menon prepared the report with these recommendations. The committee would give final touches after having one more sitting and would submit the recommendations to the state government in January itself.
At present, Malayalam is being taught till fourth standard in all schools. Those who are interested are given option for studying Arabic too. From standard V, Malayalam becomes optional. Any one of the four Malayalam, Arabic, Urdu or Sanskrit can be opted as first language. From class VIII to Xth, there are less takers for Malayalam as other languages are given preference.
In Gujarati schools in the state, English is the medium of teaching and they have the option to learn Gujarthi. In Arabic-oriented schools, there is no compulsion to study Malayalam. There Arabic or Sanskrit is chosen as two papers of first language.
