Mullaperiyar: Samples to be collected from concreted areas

Kumali: In order to prove that Mullaperiyar dam is strong, Tamil Nadu has begun steps to give samples by boring holes in the concreted area for examination. Spots have been already marked for sample collection. Though M Sasidharan claimed for Kerala that the marked spots were concreted ones and if the team has to evaluate the strength of the dam, samples must be taken from the lime and surka mixture from the old construction. Tamil Nadu officials did not consider that. The officials from the Central Soil and Materials Research Station examined the dam as per the advise of Tamil Nadu officials, by making the officers from Kerala mute onlookers. The total length of the dam is 1200 feet and the officials marked place for making bore holes at 300, 650 and 910 feet length.

But all these places marked were strengthened by concrete after years of original dam's construction. The group denied Kerala's demand that samples must be collected from more places. It is also reported that for checking the base of the dam, the diving experts ventured with remote controlled cameras but could not take the pictures as the battery was low. Due to intense cold, the diving experts immediately concluded the examination. On Thursday too, the team reached the spot on Tamil Nadu's boat. The team selected somewhat good areas of the dam for examination.
